Pakistan Quake Creates New Island

The earthquake that rocked a remote region of southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday wrought destruction but also, strangely, a bit of creation.

The 7.7-magnitude tremor, which destroyed scores of mud huts that dotted the region and killed at least 210 people, is being credited with causing a new island to form in the middle of the Arabian sea. Half-a-mile off the coast of the Pakistani port city of Gwadar, a new expanse of land reported to be 100-feet high and 200-feet wide rose out of the ocean, NBC reports.

Scientists believe the mountainous island formed thanks to an underwater “mud volcano” that sent sand and earth spewing forth amid the quake’s jostling. Officials said a similar island appeared after a 1968 earthquake but disappeared after a year.

A new photo of Abraham Lincoln taken on the day of his historic Gettysburg Address has been discovered, Smithsonian reports.

The photo depicts a crowd on the day of the speech, with Lincoln apparently standing among the people. Christopher Oakley, a former Disney animator and Civil War buff who teaches new media the the University North Carolina-Asheville, made the discovery, studying a high-resolution copy of a photograph of the day and identifying a person he believes to be Lincoln in the crowd.

Only three other photos from the Nov. 19, 1863 address have ever been found, and the legitimacy of two of those pictures have been challenged by experts. The leading Gettysburg photo expert, William Frassanito, who has previously discredited illegitimate Lincoln photographs, endorsed the new discovery: “The resemblance is 80 precent in favor.”

Mariano Rivera bobblehead night turns chaotic at Yankee Stadium

The Yankees were giving away Mariano Rivera bobbleheads to the first 18,000 fans through the gates at Yankee Stadium last night. Only problem: they didn’t have the bobbleheads. The truck delivering them broke down in New Jersey. The Yankees held the gates closed late but, when it became obvious that the bobbleheads weren’t going to arrive in time, they opened the gates, bobblehead-free. Vouchers were given out instead.

You can imagine how that went over at Yankee Stadium.

The merch arrived midway through the game and the team made an announcement that people with vouchers could line up to get their bobbleheads. The lines stretched down the concourses and, according to the Daily News, it took people several innings on line to get what they came for.
