Major League Baseball is having trouble attracting young fans and teams are struggling with injuries, says one “high-ranking [MLB] executive.”

While these issues aren’t related, he believes there’s a way to remedy both — shorten the games.

“I think they ought to change the games to seven innings,” the anonymous source told ESPN’s Buster Olney, who added that seven-inning games would finish “closer to two-and-a-half hours than three hours or longer.”

Last year, a Wall Street Journal study found that an average baseball game contains about 18 minutes of action over the course of three hours.

The executive believes games are played too slowly, and the younger generation is turning away from baseball because of it.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig says that he has apologized to his teammates and manager Don Mattingly for not arriving in time for morning batting practice, according to ESPN’s Arash Marakazi.

Puig was not with the team for an early morning batting practice session before their home opener on Friday, and was pulled from the lineup for his tardiness. The NL Rookie of the Year runner up says he spoke with the team after and that the late arrival was unintentional.

“I asked [Mattingly] for forgiveness as well as my teammates. It was my mistake… It was obviously my first opening day at home. It’s not something I planned to do or wanted to do…They accepted my apology.”

It was a wild and mostly successful weekend in Australia for Yasiel Puig, but after only two games, he may already be on manager Don Mattingly’s bad side.

Puig, who went 3-for-5 in the Dodgers’ 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks in Sydney on Sunday, left the game in the ninth inning after striking out in the top half of the frame. Puig appeared to hurt himself on a swing in his last at-bat, and didn’t take the field in the bottom of the ninth. Asked after the game about Puig’s injury, Mattingly delivered some less-than-happy-sounding remarks on his star outfielder.

The NFL postseason field could number 14 teams as early as 2015, per a report by the Washington Post‘s Mark Maske. According to that report, owners could vote on such a proposal next month during the league’s annual meetings.

“I think there’s a lot of momentum for it,” a source told Maske. “I don’t know for sure if the votes are there yet [among the owners] or not. But there is momentum. A lot of people seem in favor of it.”

Salary Cap … Explained!

The MMQB with Peter King から引用:

In the year-round coverage of the NFL, there is no topic more misunderstood than the salary cap. Cap room, cap numbers and cap consequences often aren’t what they appear to be, and at times alleged “smart” cap management is merely salvaging the present to complicate the future.

It’s a heavy subject matter, so let’s divvy up the topics and dive in:

What is the salary cap?

The official NFL team salary cap number for 2014, which will be announced next week, is expected to be somewhere between $130-133 million. If so, it would mark the first time the number has exceeded the 2009 threshold of $128 million.

That, however, is not really “the number.” Each NFL team has an adjusted cap number modified due to: 1) cap room carryover from the previous year—a new feature of the 2011 CBA; and 2) netting out of the previous year’s earned unlikely incentives…
